CCC Recycling

Contra Costa College is not only home to many college students, but also to HIGH School students from Middle College High School (MCHS). You may see us running around campus in big clusters, going from one class to another, or hanging around the amphitheater or rec room during lunch time. We are just high school students CONCURRENTLY enrolled in college!! Isn't that cool??

Well anyways, you may be wondering why I'm talking about MCHS.....it's because we're in charge of keeping our campus Eco friendly!! The MCHS leadership class helps empty out all the BLUE recycle bins to keep our school clean. Now, we're planning to place about 400 blue recycling boxes around each classroom so that we can increase the earth friendly act, as well as earn money from the recycling. I've seen a lot of recyclable materials being thrown in the trash, when it should have been thrown in the BLUE recycle bins. The school loses money from this because it costs them to have the garbage truck pick up the garbage, but it's free to pick up the recycles. So if you have any papers, bottles, or other recyclable materials, please...please...PRETTY please make sure to throw them into the recycling bins.

LIBRARY!! FINALLY!!

Ladies and Gentlemen....I'm pleased to announce that the LIBRARY is officially opened!!! Today was the first day of opening the very sleek, and fancy library. A lot of attention to detail was put into planning and building this library. Even the library's granite countertops are fancy, with its unique triangle cut edge....yes I notice little things like that :)! They also have a new machine where you can self check out books, just by first scanning your id card, then the barcode on your book, just as if you were the librarian!

Well if you have not gone to see the spanky new library...get to it!! I will upload pictures of the library soon!!

LIBRARY UPDATE!!

The Library is moving September 7!!!

Wheee!
Let's do it again!

The CCC Library will move back into its remodeled building on Friday, Sept. 7 (again). Since school is in session for this move (we’ll try to stay put this time), we will need to make some temporary changes to the availability of library services for a couple of days:
  • Sept. 7 (Friday) -- 8am - 12N Library-teria will be open as usual until noon in its SA Bldg space.
  • Sept. 7 (Friday) -- 12N - 1:45pm The Library will offer LIMITED SERVICES in the LISC/Fireside Room, providing study space and computers. Reserve books & telecourse tapes will NOT BE AVAILABLE, as they will be in process of being moved.
  • Sept. 8 (Saturday) – Library will be CLOSED for unpacking.
The Library will REOPEN at 8am on Monday, September 10, 2007.

Thank you for your patience and understanding with these changes, with the confusion of the past month, and with the limitations of the past 2 years. If you have not been peeking/sneaking into the building, you will be (like us) quite pleased with its beauty, new layout, and new “stuff!”

PRESS RELEASE
RIDERS ON THE STORM, a multi-media choreo-opera documenting the pivotal period in civil rights history, receives its World Premiere April 19 at Contra Costa College’s John and Jean Knox Center for Performing Arts in San Pablo.
Written and Directed by Clay David, this riveting and explosive new work sheds light on the unspoken events that led to the 1963 Washington D.C. March for Freedom and Jobs. Police Beatings, The Klu Klux Klan and the murder of 4 young girls in the bombing of a Birmingham Church are among the events reflecting the era of struggle the 1960s.
According to David, RIDERS ON THE STORM “Creates an aesthetic that reflects and preserves the story of the outsiders who refused to be silenced.” It features a mutli-generational cast of 40 actors who portray leaders Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King, Bayard Rustin, John F. Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy, J. Edgar Hoover, Malcolm X, Adam Clayton Powell, George McGovern, Roy Wilkins, and many active with Freedom Movement organizations during the 1960s
"Through powerful behind-the-scenes dialogue, award-winning gospel and folk music, hard hitting sermons and speeches, and harrowing archival footage, RIDERS ON THE STORM is our way of honoring the quest for freedom that continues to build our Nation and change the world.” said David, who is a well known Bay Area director, and serves as Drama Chairman at the College.
David calls the style of the play “a first for American theatre audiences,” adding “it sheds new-found light on the nightmare world of the Civil Rights Movement. This incredible cast passionately embraces reenacting history to orchestrate police beatings, the KKK, and the Birmingham church bombing onstage.”
“The toxic world of racism, the FBI and its malevolent methods of wire-tapping, and homophobia in the African-American church are central to this story. The sad profundity of RIDERS ON THE STORM is that we are still engulfed in the quagmire of all of these hot-button issues.”

Motherland

"MOTHERLAND, a collage of monologues and short stories woven together into a rich tapestry of text, music, movement and projected video, is conceived and directed by Andrea Weber (Company member of the acclaimed Shotgun Players) and written by Jeannette DesBoine.

According to Weber, the show is based on family matriarchal interviews conducted by CCC students. "The monologues give voice to immigrant's perception of life in America. What emerges is a conversation between immigrants, white Americans and Black Americans of the community."

"We're a diverse culture," she said, adding Contra Costa County's populace reflects the rich ancestry of the play. MOTHERLAND also examines the gains and losses of immigration, the struggle of poverty, assimilation, and culture clashes. MOTHERLAND, is a community based performance piece "that responds to the issues area residents face," said Weber. "The conversation investigates who is getting what, whether or not we are taking care of our own, and if the American Dream is worth coming to this country for."

When: March 1, 2, and 3 2007, 8pm

Computer Proficiency Exam Info

CCC has a computer proficiency requirement for students who want to earn an Associate degree. The Computer Proficiency Exam only fulfills the college’s requirement for an Associate degree. It cannot be used to challenge a course, it does not give the student any credit towards any course, and it does not fulfill any computer course requirement needed for a major. Students transferring to a four-year college/university without a CCC degree are not required to take this exam. THE EXAM MAY ONLY BE TAKEN ONCE.

Three ways to satisfy the Computer Proficiency Requirement:

  1. Submit a transcript from an accredited institution listing the successful completion of a course (or courses) equivalent to a CCC course that fulfills the requirement. Successful completion is determined by a letter grade of C or better OR the equivalent.
  2. Successfully complete a class that fulfills the requirement. (CIS 110 is one of many courses satisfying the requirement.) Successful completion is determined by a letter grade of C or better OR the equivalent.
  3. Successfully complete the Computer Proficiency Exam given by the college. Successful completion is determined by achieving a score of 65% or better on each of the three components of the exam.

The exam covers three different areas of computing:

  1. Word Processing. The candidate is expected to know how to use Word for Windows. The concept list includes (but is not limited to) creating, modifying, saving, printing, margins, indents, formats, tabs, bullets and spell checking.
  2. Internet. The candidate is expected to know how to use Internet Explorer and be able to search for and find information on the World Wide Web.
  3. Storage Maintenance. The candidate is expected to be able to manipulate their storage area using Windows Explorer. The concepts list includes (but is not limited to) preparing a diskette, copying a diskette, folders, changing file names, copying files, moving files and removing files.

The college provides the computer materials used in the Computer Proficiency Exam. Students taking the exam should bring the following.

1. A pen or pencil.
2. Any (non-audible) book(s) or notes to assist in the completion of the exam.
3. A valid form of identification with your name and your picture. This identification must be shown to the proctor at the beginning of the exam. CCC student identification cards and DMV licenses are acceptable forms of identification.

For the Spring 2007 semester, the exams are scheduled in the Computer Technology Center -128 (CTC-128), from 11:00am – 1:00pm.
